Life In Every Breath

A film featuring an interview with one of our patients in the last month of her life, has been announced as a finalist at the Smiley Charity Film Awards.

The awards aim to celebrate film-making in the charity sector, but also to highlight the issues within them and the causes they stand for.

ellenor’s Life In Every Breath film is a finalist in the £5m - £15m income bracket. Other categories included those for long-form, cause and other income brackets, to ensure a fair and level playing field.

A public vote pushed us through to the final stage of the competition.

Gail Price was featured with husband of 48 years Peter, in our film, talking about her experience of being cared for at ellenor. She talked about her care being her choice, having decided to spend the time she had left, enjoying fun and laughter rather than going through more treatment. It also showed interviews with staff, talking about how they support patients – starting with asking them what their beliefs, values and wishes are, listening to their journey so far and enabling them to be in charge of their own care. Comfort, support, dignity and a holistic approach enable ellenor to look at the emotional and psychological needs, alongside their medical ones, allowing them to carry on living for whatever time they have left.

The film also touched on early referral – to give ellenor the chance to help people to live until the end of their life, with care given at home, or at the hospice.

Gail died on September 13th last year (2024), not long after she was filmed. Peter said about the shortlist: ''This is absolutely brilliant news that ellenor’s film ‘Life In Every Breath’ has been shortlisted as a finalist. “It is a testament to the wonderful work that is carried on, day in day out, by the fantastic doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at ellenor for the local community in treating and caring for patients who are facing up to their battles against cancer. “The film also shows how families, friends and loved ones of those patients are so welcomed and looked after and treated as part of the ellenor family. “Above all, the film shows how remarkable and courageous my beautiful wife Gail Price was in facing her own end of life, but that courage and spirit was in such a large way, helped by the care and love that ellenor gave to Gail.

ellenor staff will attend the awards ceremony at the O2 Indigo on March 20th to find out if the film wins. Peter is unable to attend due to a prior commitment but will be keeping his fingers crossed for us on the night.
