Steve Franklin, author of The Golden Snail

Steve began work: starting with an A4 sheet of paper, a few early pencil sketches of the characters, and the beginnings of a basic story. At first, it was only intended for his grandchildren (who are also the story’s main characters). But, after it was read out in Billie’s school – to the joy of the class – Steve’s son convinced him the tale deserved a wider audience.

Now, The Golden Snail – written, illustrated, and published by Steve Franklin – is available to buy for just £3.50, with £1 of that going to ellenor. (The rest funds further rounds of published copies.)

Meet Amol, running the length of England in 2025.

This summer, Amol is running the length of England in memory of his mum, who passed away 20 years ago this coming July. In her final days, his mum was cared for by the incredible team at ellenor, who provided her with outstanding care to ensure she was comfortable. The support they gave not only to my mum but also to our family during that difficult time is something I will never forget.

The run will take 13 days, beginning in Berwick-upon-Tweed and ending at Lands End, a total distance of 867km (averaging 67km a day). As I take on this challenging run, I am raising funds for ellenor to help them continue their vital work, ensuring that others can receive the same compassionate care that made such a difference in our lives.

Your support means the world to me, and together, we can help make sure this amazing hospice can continue to be there for families like mine.

Fundraising and Supporter Stories

Our incredible supporters are at the heart of everything we do. From sponsored runs to bake sales, every effort makes a huge difference. Fundraising is not just about raising money- it’s about bringing people together, sharing stories, and showing that we’re stronger as a community. Every pound raised helps us continue our work and support those who need it most.

Here are just a few examples of the amazing things our supporters are doing to make a real impact.

Jane's Story

"My sister was cared for by the hospice... the care at ellenor was exemplary, and the staff were all very caring. Whilst visiting on one occasion, I chatted to Fundraising Officer Leah Poppy, and mentioned that I was a member of The Marlowe Singers. I asked if ellenor would like us to sing at any of their events, which we did on three occasions.

As the result of a call-out from the fundraising team, I also volunteered. [Since then] I have helped out at the Walkathon and Twilight Walk, and hosted a Tea for ellenor party to raise funds for the hospice in August. I look forward to helping with ellenor's fundraising activities in the future."

Gravesend Rugby Club and ellenor

Hospice charity ellenor and Gravesend Rugby Football Club share similar goals, in as much as they serve and support the diverse Gravesend community, so much so that they have decided to hold their own high-profile “Friendly” in the form of a three-year partnership.

Club Chairman Mark Bruce said: “Some of our members have benefitted from the compassionate care ellenor provides to local patients and their families. We are proud to be working with them over the next 3 years, to spread the word about the work they do and to raise funds for a vital and very worthy local charity."
