UNITING FOR A CAUSE: THE RYAN FAMILY’S COMMITMENT TO ELLENOR’S TWILIGHT WALK

The Ryan family has a heartfelt reason for participating in ellenor’s Twilight Walk year after year. Deeply moved by the compassionate care their close friend received during her final months, they made a promise to give back to the hospice charity that made such a difference in her life.

Now, for the fifth consecutive year, the Ryans are gearing up for the popular 10k Twilight Walk, and they’re inviting others to join them in this meaningful event. It’s an opportunity to honour loved ones, share cherished memories, and come together as a community in support of ellenor’s vital work.

On September 20th, Tom and Laura Ryan will be remembering, among others, Debra Barden, who suffered a brain tumour and was at the hospice for six months in 2019 before she died at the age of 42. Her name will be on the back of their bright orange Twilight Walk tee-shirts, along with the names of other people they have known who have received end-of-life care from the charity.

Laura said: “A lot of people know someone who has been helped by ellenor, but whether you have that personal connection or not, this is an amazing community event. There’s a brilliant atmosphere and it’s very emotional, especially reading all the messages on the back of people’s tee-shirts.

“You always meet so many people you know. For a couple of years, our house was on the route, so people were even running in to use the toilet. And now the Gurdwara Temple are involved it’s wonderful. They make such tasty snacks for the halfway stop.

“I have always known about ellenor as we are a Gravesend family. Sadly we have had dear family members and friends have had parents who have died at the hospice. Our friend’s dad passed away there last year and another good friend lost her mum earlier this year. It’s so important for the community to support ellenor. You presume everyone knows about it, but of course there are new people coming to the area all the time, so it’s important to share news and stories especially on Facebook and other social media.

“Since becoming involved I have learned so much more about what ellenor does. You might think it is for people going into the hospice when they are dying but it is not just about the hospice ward. ellenor does so much in the community and for the families of patients, providing services like counselling. They also came out to my friend’s mum, caring for her at home before she passed away.”

The Twilight Walk is an evening walk around the town of Gravesend, with participants painting the town orange with their tee-shirts, and fancy-dress outfits. Laura and Ella first took part in 2019.

Laura said: “Our friend Debra was in the hospice when we did the walk for the first time along with many other of her family and friends. We all went to visit her before we set out on an incredibly emotional walk. After that first year, the company I worked for gave some sponsorship, and some of us also came into the hospice to help collect Christmas gifts and decorating the tree. Myself and 2 colleagues also did the London to Gravesend Walkathon organised by ellenor in 2021 raising £1400.

"2020 year was lockdown so a group of Deb’s friends and her husband Paul and children, Milly and Liam, did a ‘virtual’ walk, again all meeting at the hospice and raised £1700 as team ‘Zebra for Debra’. The year after that I was away so my husband Tom did the walk with our two children William and Ella; Ella is now at Uni so was not able to do it last year and this year it will be Tom, William and I and my mum is joining us for the first time.”

The Ryan family always enjoy meeting up with friends on the walk including Debra’s family and other friends. It’s a great way for them to reminisce and raise money for other ellenor families on new journeys.

William, 17, and Ella, 19, have enjoyed taking part too, especially meeting friends along the way. William is a pupil at St George’s C of E School in Gravesend, and Laura also works there as EA to the CEO of the Aletheia Academies Trust.

Tom held a fundraising quiz at the school earlier this year before taking part in the London Marathon. He raised more than £4,000 for ellenor through fundraising and sponsorship! St George’s is now working in partnership with ellenor. In fact, it is this year’s start and end point for the walk.

Laura said: “We all went along to watch Tom do the marathon. He last did it 16 years ago. This time he had more injuries, but he completed it 30 minutes faster! In fact, we’ve been going up to London for the past few years to watch various people we know run for ellenor, and next year our son William is hoping to do it too.”

During the past five years, the Ryan family and their friends have raised thousands to ensure we are able to keep providing vital services at its hospice in Northfleet and out in the wider community. Their dedication is a testament to the profound difference that compassionate care can make, not just for patients, but for entire families. By participating in the Twilight Walk, they hope to inspire others to join them in supporting ellenor’s mission, ensuring that more families can receive the care and support they need during life’s most challenging moments.

This year’s Twilight Walk starts at 7pm on September 20 from St George’s C of E School in Meadow Road. Tickets are £18 for adults and £9 for under 16s. A family ticket is £45. ellenor encourages walkers to raise sponsorship but there is no minimum requirement. To book, go to ellenor’s website
