That’s the reality for over 1,700 ellenor patients receiving end-of-life care from our Hospice @ Home nurses. This care allows them to spend their final days in familiar surroundings, with their loved ones by their side.
I’m Hannah, and I work in the Fundraising Team at ellenor. Recently, I had the privilege of spending a day shadowing Charly – one of our incredible Clinical Nurse Specialists. An experience that truly opened my eyes to the depth of compassion and skill that our nurses bring to every visit.
Did you know that currently over 90% of ellenor’s care is given from home? This is only possible thanks to your donations and the generous support of others like you.
That’s why we’re inviting you to play our Grand Prize Draw this Summer. Where for just £2 a ticket, you can not only continue to ensure patients receive care in a place of their choice but are also in with a chance to win up to £2,000 or a summer picnic hamper from Morrisons!
“For many of those I care for, the best place to die is home. In familiar surroundings, with familiar people, maybe even in a familiar bed” – Charly, Clinical Nurse Specialist.
For Charly it may not be about helping her patients ‘get better’ (due to the life limiting conditions our patients face), but it’s helping them to feel as well as they can be – which looks different for everyone.
This might mean giving specialist advise, managing pain or simply holding a hand and offering reassurance. It’s about ensuring that their lives remain their own, with dignity.
One patient Charly cared for had Motor Neurone Disease. A cruel illness that weakens the muscles, making movement, speech and even breathing difficult, whilst the mind remains unaffected. He struggled with insomnia, staring at the ceiling for hours each night, unable to move. Seeing his distress, Charly and her team pooled their resources to buy a projector, so he could listen to music and watch soothing images above him. Offering comfort in those long, restless nights
